The British Institute in Eastern Africa has been active since 1960 and has its research centre, including lecture facilities, events garden, work spaces and reference library in Nairobi, Kenya. The BIEA is a registered charity in the UK, and a registered NGO in Kenya, which exists to promote innovative research in all the disciplines in the humanities and social sciences within the wider region of eastern Africa and beyond.

As well as conducting research, the BIEA offers financial support , affiliation services and logistical assistance to research projects, and runs several graduate and postgraduate educational opportunities including our renowned Graduate Attachment Scheme (GAS). The Institute publishes a regular news bulletin as well as two high-impact peer-reviewed journals, Azania: Archaeological Research in Africa, and the Journal of Eastern African Studies. The BIEA is one of the British international Research Institutes (BIRI).
