BIEA also maintains a large archive of unpublished records and images collected by a wide range of researchers over the last 50 years. Parts of this archive are available as open access resources and can be accessed via The Archaeology Data Servicehttps://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/archives/biea

We are currently in the process of digitizing other parts of our archive, and these will be made available online in due course.

BIEA Physical Archive

The BIEA’s physical archive includes collections from:

  • Ethiopia
  • Kenya
  • Tanzania
  • Somalia

The physical archive is available for in-person research at our institute in Nairobi. Please contact the BIEA’s Country Director ([email protected]) in the first instance for queries regarding the use of the BIEA’s physical archive.


BIEA/IFRA Library

The BIEA/IFRA holds a large collection books, journals, off-prints, theses, and grey literature covering African (and especially Eastern African) history, archaeology, ethnography and related subjects.
