The British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) promotes innovative research on the histories, cultures, and societies of a region spanning Sudan to Mozambique.
These dynamics generate new questions about the region’s past and present, demanding deeper critical inquiry, and creating opportunities for transformative knowledge production.
This calls for research that is attentive to social and economic inequalities and is guided by ethical imperatives to bring marginalized issues, histories, and people to the forefront of intellectual concerns and global debates. BIEA will nurture transnational and transcultural collaborations among arts, humanities and social science researchers working on the region from Sudan to Mozambique.
We will promote consultative and collaborative research that addresses the destructive legacies of colonialism and persistent racial inequality. The aim is to foster knowledge production that is meaningful locally and regionally, while achieving world-class standards and contributing ground-breaking insights at the international level. Through these commitments, the BIEA will strengthen its role as a leading institute for research, training, and scholarly exchange in Eastern Africa.
