The BIEA offers a limited number of full or part-time research positions, including postdoctoral research fellows, research associates and interns, based either at our Nairobi research centre, or at a partner university. We also recruit researchers at various levels as part of collaborative research projects. All opportunities are communicated to members through our mailing list.
Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered to early career researchers who have completed doctoral studies within the last five years. Fellows are appointed either full- or part-time usually for one or two-year terms. They are either based at the BIEA Research Centre in Nairobi, Kenya or hosted by a partner university. In additon to conducting and publishing high-quality research, Research Fellows are expected to contribute actively to the BIEA’s scholarly community.

Research Associate opportunities for up to six junior postdoctoral scholars are advertised annually in an open competition. The applicants must have completed doctoral studies within the last five years and be in universities in selected countries in Eastern Africa. They are appointed for a period of two years on an honorary basis and awarded a small fieldwork grant to pursue innovative research. They are also expected to contribute to the BIEA’s scholarly community. Opportunities are typically advertised in April.

Senior Research Associates are leading scholars of humanities or social sciences based in selected universities in Eastern Africa. They are honorary positions awarded in recognition of contributions to scholarship in Eastern Africa and a record of collaboration with the BIEA for two years (renewable).

Honorary Fellowships are awarded in recognition of a significant contribution to research in collaboration with the BIEA and to facilitate continued collaboration for the duration of a research project or partnership. They receive no remuneration from the BIEA. Nominations and applications to the Research Committee are by joint invitation of the BIEA Director and Kenya Director.

Research Interns support research events, communications or publications. They must hold a master’s degree and will be supported to develop this into a PhD application, publication or blog. They may work remotely or be hosted at a partner university.
