Membership costs

Becoming a BIEA member gives you access to a vibrant research community, with exclusive opportunities and resources.

Membership to the BIEA provides exclusive access to:

• BIEA’s Society Journals
• BIEA’s Society Podcasts
• BIEA’s weekly e-bulletin
• Ability to apply for BIEA grants
• BIEA/IFRA Library in Nairobi (in-person)

Membership fees are payable annually at the rates outlined below:

• Full Member (international): £20.00 per year.
• Student Member (international): £15.00 per year with a valid student identification card as proof.
• Full Membership (East Africa): £10 per year (or equivalent local currency, eg. 2000 KES)
• Student Membership (East Africa): Free, with a valid student identification card as proof.

Members gain free access BIEA’s society journals and have an additional option to subscribe to print editions annually at the following cost:

• • Azania £15 (or equivalent local currency)
  • Journal of Eastern African Studies: £20 (or equivalent local currency).
  • Two society journals, Azania and Journal of Eastern African Studies: £35 (or equivalent local currency)

Note that members requesting print editions will be required to supply the BIEA with additional personal details, which will be kept securely by BIEA for the duration of the membership, in accordance with BIEA’s Data Protection policy [LINK]. BIEA will send these personal details to Taylor & Francis on a quarterly basis to ensure that members receive their print copies. Taylor & Francis will not use this personal information for any other purpose.

How to join

Membership is open to all researchers and runs for one year from the date of registration.

There are three options to make membership payments to BIEA:

1. You can register and pay for an annual membership on the members portal here using debit/credit card, or M-Pesa
2. You can pay for membership only, or membership plus a donation here. Search by charity name: British Institute in Eastern Africa and follow instructions to pay. Take a screenshot as evidence of the transaction then add your details to this form LINK and email both to [email protected] to complete your registration.
3. You can make a transfer to either BIEA Kenya or BIEA bank accounts. Take a screenshot/photo as evidence of the transaction, then add your details to this form LINK and email both to [email protected] to complete your registration.

Note that BIEA reserves the right to reject membership applications in accordance with its policies and is under no obligation to explain such decisions.
