Job Advert: Librarian, British Institute in Eastern Africa

The British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) in Kenya seeks to appoint a Librarian on a full-time position for one year in the first instance, with a possibility for renewal following achievement of Key Performance Indicators. The individual will be required to be a qualified Librarian with a two to three years’ experience in library work.

In line with Kenyan Government employment policies, we seek to fill this post with a Kenyan Citizen. The role is based at the BIEA’s research centre in Kileleshwa, Nairobi. Library Position: further particulars

The British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) is one of eight British International Research Institutes, or BIRI, funded by the UK government via the British Academy, the UK’s national Academy for humanities and social sciences. The BIEA’s remit is to conduct, support, and facilitate innovative, world-leading, high-impact research across the humanities, social sciences, in Eastern Africa and across the African continent. The BIEA’s research centre and library is located in Nairobi on Laikipia Road, Kileleshwa.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • General library work, including but not limited to: – Organizing library materials so they are easy to find, assisting library users to conduct their research, manage library stock, promote the use of the library and deal with enquiries from library users
  • Providing a monthly social media contribution to provide updates on new acquisitions and to share information about the library with our research community and members
  • Sourcing for new books and journals
  • Ensuring the library is an engaging space fit for researchers
  • Developing innovative strategies to modernize the user experience
  • Implement best library practices
  • Any reasonable adhoc duties as required

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Library and Information Science from a recognized University.
  • At least 2 years library and IT experience
  • IT proficiency with Computer Technology skills and experience of Integrated Library
  • Knowledge and experience of bibliographic control principles and library best practices
  • High level of personal integrity and commitment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with tight deadlines & manage workload independently.
  • Team player with strong organizational skills.
  • Capability of multitasking and working with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Archival knowledge would be an added advantage.
