Eastern Africa’s Legacy and Future: Climate, Heritage, and Peace in the Digital Era

The British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) invites early career researchers (MA and PhD students) focusing on Eastern African studies to submit abstracts for an interdisciplinary conference at the intersection of climate change, cultural heritage, digital humanities, peace, and conflict. The event aims to foster dialogue about the conditions that have shaped, are shaping, and will shape human – environment interactions.

Themes:

  • Climate Change: Impacts on ecosystems, adaptation, and sustainability in Eastern Africa.
  • Cultural Heritage: Preserving tangible/intangible heritage (e.g., archives, sites) amid environmental and social shifts.
  • Digital Humanities: Leveraging digital tools (e.g., GIS, Wikidata) for heritage documentation, climate impact mapping, or conflict analysis.
  • Peace and Conflict: Climate and heritage roles in conflict resolution and community resilience.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Submit abstracts (max 300 words)
  • Name your abstract file clearly and precisely with the abstract title /or your name
  • Only attach the abstract. Don’t paste it on the email body.
  • Strictly use ‘BIEA Graduate Conference 2025’ as your Email Subject
  • Submit your abstract to [email protected] by November 15th, 2025.
