This award supports junior post-doctoral scholars (within five years of their PhD) to join the BIEA for one year as a Research Associate (30 July 2025- 30 July 2026). We are interested in applications from any discipline in the humanities and social sciences. To apply, you must be residing and researching in one of the following Eastern African countries: Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Zimbabwe or Zambia. You must have an established record of research involving some form of fieldwork, for instance ethnographic, archaeological, environmental, interview or survey-based. Your research should also ideally have some connection with one or more of the following BIEA research themes: Africa in the World; Retelling the Past; Changing Environments; Urban Lives; Technologies of Knowledge; Next Generations (further information on these themes is available here).
Each Research Associate will receive a grant of £800 to support their association with the BIEA. This funding may be used to contribute to fieldwork costs and to organise at least one activity to promote awareness of BIEA at your home institution. You will be expected to become active members of the BIEA research community and to deliver one seminar focusing on your fieldwork (online or in person). You will also be encouraged to engage with, and contribute to, BIEA networks and membership.
